Promoting Holistic Healing & Practices

The American Board of Holistic Medicine was founded in 1996 and officially changed its name to the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine in 2008. The Vision of the ABIHM is to establish and maintain the highest standards of medical care, ignite and sustain the joy and passion of physicians in their work, establish the role of unconditional love as the basis of healing and support, and to recognize the importance of the health of the planet as integral to human health. The intention of this process is the transformation of medical systems towards holism, by combining science and compassion.

The current direction of the ABIHM is to develop the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABoIM) with the University of Arizona and other academic institutions under the administration of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS). The ABoIM certification will involve a fellowship prerequisite, which may be waived for ABIHM Diplomates who undergo the ABoIM exam by 2016. For more information on the ABPS, please click here. See our Specialty Page to learn more about the ABoIM and its implications for ABIHM Diplomates or interested candidates. For information about how to register for one of our final three certification examinations (by early 2013), please refer to our Board Certification Page.  All ABIHM Diplomates who wish to become certified by the ABPS will be required to sit for the new exam.

We are looking forward to our 13th Annual Review Course, The Science and Clinical Application of Integrative Holistic Medicine, held in San Diego, CA at the Mission Bay Hilton, October 27th (precon) through November 1st , 2011, followed by our Certification Exam. Including the preconference, roughly 40 hours of Category One CME credits are generally available to physicians, and CEU’s are also available for other practitioners. The Annual Review Course is widely recognized for its scholarly, evidence-based content, delivered in a manner that effectively weaves concepts of holism throughout the program.

ABIHM Certification has given me the vehicle with which I have advanced beyond my conventional training in medicine. Maintaining certification is the "fuel in the tank" for continuing down the road less traveled.
