The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

This quote is by Thomas Edison (1847-1931), inventor of the light bulb, the phonograph, and with over a thousand patents for inventions. The innovative, creative Edison was my childhood hero. I read every available book in the Phoenix Public Library on his life and work.  Edison’s futuristic vision for the evolution of medicine was a noble one that I have held like...

This book is an autobiography of the soul of Dr. Lee Lipsenthal in which he describes both his living and dying. Lee was a well known holistic physician whose life work evolved from being an internist in private practice, to being a researcher with Dean Ornish’s prevention programs, and finally an internationally known presenter on creating a balance in a medical professional life. “When men lack a sense of awe, there will be disaster.”

Lao Tsu

In a recent issue of Academic Medicine, editor Steven L. Kanter, MD, spoke about the value of “case studies that are analytic, penetrating, that illuminate fundamental precepts and concepts, and that reveal new avenues for research or theory development, and have the potential to broaden and deepen knowledge and understanding in  a way that might not be available otherwise.” (1) Read More »

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lee Lipsenthal, MD, ABIHM.  Lee was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2009; it returned several months ago.  He was surrounded by family when he crossed over on Monday, September 19, 2011.

Lee had a conventional medical training, with an undergraduate degree from George Washington, medical school at Howard University, residency at Medical College of Pennsylvania.   During his training, though, he became interested in prevention of heart disease, rather than...

While serving as a hospital administrator for over twenty years, I was aware of numerous people who had died in the emergency room because they had no insurance, had not yet qualified for Medicaid and were terrified that the cost of care would force them to live on the street.  Consequently, they waited too long to come in for treatment, and they died.

Modern Healthcare’s August 22nd edition has listed the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2011. (Somehow they’ve missed me again.)  They’ve listed Republican ...

The American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM) was incorporated in 1996 to certify physicians through a psychometrically validated examination process. Since 2000, when we provided our first exam, we have certified nearly 1500 physicians.   The process of educating physicians through our Annual Review Course and our extensive Core Curriculum has established a grounding and common knowledge base for those seeking board certification in integrative holistic medicine. Over the last few years, our Board of Directors has proposed more stringent criteria for board certification in Integrative Medicine (IM). The path of all medical specialties and subspecialties, as they gain more...

Conventional health care has ignored spirituality for far too long. Integrative medicine acknowledges the crucial importance of our spiritual beliefs and the dramatic influence they exert in our health and well-being. The foundation of holistic medicine and it’s newer cousin, integrative medicine, builds on the concept of interconnected body-mind-spirit. What this means is that our body, our mind and our spirit are indivisible and inter connected. Conventional health care suffers because it wrongly assumes that one can provide comprehensive health care to the body without recognition given to the influence of mind and spirit. Likewise, modern...

When Health Affairs released a first ever study on geographic variances in Medicaid spending on July 7th, it was a new twist on transparency that is just the beginning of what will become a detail by detail expose’ of care and treatment of patients in the United States. Just imagine a few years from now when every record is electronic and every detail will be instantly available to the government. Like this variance report, we will begin to see the good, the bad and the ugly of how medicine is practiced in this country. HOW DO YOU...
