My interests in Integrative-Holistic medicine were initially rooted thirty-five years ago in my love for music and interest in the martial arts.  Each of these areas deal with creativity, visualization, focus, concentration or intent, and each have a specific body/mind/spirit result.  Most importantly both martial arts and music bring an individual to higher levels of consciousness.  It was the evening of my medical school graduation, however, that I had my first experience with a very unique system known as Zero Balancing.  I will...

This is the 10th anniversary of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine!  It’s been ten years since a band of plucky, heart-felt, renegade men and women physicians boldly established the ABIHM.  These revolutionary doctors strongly believed that good health care included much more than prescribing medicine and recommending surgery.  They wanted to know more about the underlying causes of illness.  They believed in the “holistic” theory that each damaged or ill part of their patient was part of their much larger system, be it looking...

We at the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine love what we do – treating patients holistically – mind, body, and spirit.  All 1,400 of us have a personal story of how we came to practice medicine this way.

It may have started simply with a conversation with a trusted mentor, a sense that our medical training was missing something, or a coffee with a friend who had started journeying down this path.  Whatever the case, we are glad that...

I decided to become a psychiatrist in high school after my first psychology class. The amazing capacity of the human mind simply astounded me. I wanted to help people by using this power of the mind. What intrigued me the most then (and now) is that our human potential remains only partially understood. I am still on that journey of discovery about our true potential. To this end, I resonate with the theme of empowerment: my greatest day is the day that you have the...

Hi! My name is Nancy Sudak, MD, and I am the Executive Director of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). When the first Review Course and certification exam were launched in 2000, I was tremendously excited about the possibility of learning about integrative holistic medicine systematically and comprehensively. I poured over the Course Curriculum Study Guide in preparation for the exam, and recall the absolute pleasure I took in learning such interesting, scholarly, and useful material. It felt like seeing the Truth, and...

In retrospect, the start of my journey was in 1988, in the second year of my residency. Dr. Bruce Middendorf instructed each resident rotating through the outpatient department to read Love, Medicine, and Miracles by Dr. Bernie Siegel.

After completion of my residency, I decided to travel prior to entering private practice. I got the “travel bug” and for 2 years did locum tenens work to support myself, and travelled. For the first time since high school, I had the opportunity to read books not assigned...

When I discovered the ABIHM right after the completion of my Internal Medicine residency, it was like a fish out of water who had finally found water.  I had always felt that there was something missing in my training and that the real questions of what was causing illness was not only not being answered, but not even being asked.

I met like minded people who were also compassionate and many were brilliant.  I attended many conferences and workshops, the foundation being the ABIHM review course.  I learned the missing...

Being a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine is a great honor. It denotes a practitioner who is a safe haven for patients hoping to find good holistic care integrating complementary and alternative therapies with the strong science and evidence base of allopathic medicine. Patients receive great care from diplomates and diplomates grow their practices when these patients find them.
